RRIF minimum withdrawal
RRIF parameters
“This calculator estimates, for informational purposes only, the minimum withdrawals prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency for a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF), along with a projection of the balance based on a constant hypothetical rate of return. The applicable factor is determined by the age reached on January 1 of each year. No tax on withdrawals is taken into account (RRIF withdrawals are fully taxable as ordinary income). This result does not constitute financial or tax advice; consult your advisor for a personalized analysis.”
Calculation assumptions
- Factors prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency (2015 budget), applicable to RRIFs established after 1992 — not indexed, unchanged for 2026. For an age under 71, the legal factor is 1 ÷ (90 − age).
- The minimum withdrawal for a given year is calculated on the RRIF balance as of January 1 of that year (before that year’s withdrawal).
- In “Fixed amount” mode, the actual withdrawal is the greater of the desired amount and the prescribed minimum; it cannot exceed the available balance.
- The annual return is applied to the balance remaining after each year’s withdrawal.
- No tax (withholding or tax payable) is taken into account on withdrawals.
- The projection extends to age 100 or until the balance is depleted, whichever comes first.
